Introduction:- The Battle of Longewala was one of the major decisive battles fought on the Western sector during the India - Pakistan War of 1971. On the night of 04/05 Dec 1971, Pakistan forces comprising 4000 soldiers, T-59 & Sherman tanks, and a medium artillery battery attacked Longewala border post held by 23 PUNJAB. Inspite of being outnumbered, Indian soldiers gallantly held the post and requisitioned support of IAF. At the dawn of 5th Dec 1971, the Hunter aircraft based at Jaisalmer wreaked havoc on the Pakistani troops with their devastating fire power. The Hunters of 122 Squadron flew 18 sorties and destroyed 36 enemy tanks, 100 vehicles and killed 200 Pakistan soldiers in a very short span of time thwarting the advance of Pakistani army in its tracks.

The Night of Fury:-On the night of December 4th, Pakistani forces launched a fierce attack under the cover of darkness. Tanks rumbled across the desert, supported by heavy artillery fire. But the Indian soldiers remained determined. They held their ground, firing back with anti-tank rockets and machine guns. The battle raged throughout the night, with the deafening sounds of explosions and the flashes of gunfire illuminating the desert sky.

Airborne Assistance:- In the critical hours of the battle, the Indian Air Force played a pivotal role. Four Hunter fighter jets, alerted by Major Chandpuri, arrived on the scene at daybreak. These nimble aircraft, piloted with exceptional skill, bombarded the Pakistani tanks and armored vehicles, causing significant damage and demoralizing the enemy troops.

Turning the Tide: The combined efforts of the ground troops and the Air Force proved decisive. The Pakistani forces, facing heavy losses and demoralized by the relentless defense, retreated in disarray. The Battle of Longewala had concluded, with a resounding victory for the Indian Army.

Outcome and Significance: The Battle of Longewala showcased the extraordinary courage and resilience of the Indian soldiers. Their strategic maneuvers, combined with the timely intervention of the Air Force, thwarted a much larger Pakistani offensive. The victory at Longewala not only boosted the morale of Indian troops but also helped secure the western sector during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.

Legacy:- The Battle of Longewala continues to be celebrated as a symbol of Indian military prowess and unwavering spirit. The bravery of the soldiers and the tactical brilliance displayed during the battle inspire generations of military personnel and civilians alike. A war memorial has been erected at Longewala to honor the sacrifices made by those who fought so valiantly.
