The Battle of Tithwal |टिथवाल का युद्ध

 


Introduction:- The Battle of Tithwal was one of the fiercest and longest battles fought during India - Pakistan conflict in 1947-48. During initial stages, Pashtun tribal militia had crossed the border and occupied strategically important village of Tithwal on Indian side which was fought over and claimed by both sides on a number of occasions. Attacker's primary aim was to capture the Richhmar Gali located South of Tithwal and Nastachun Pass, East of Tithwal which was held by Indian Army. A massive attack was launched by Pakistan Army on 13 October 1948 hoping to capture the posts held by Indian troops but failed miserably with heavy casualties due to undaunting courage and valour displayed by Indian troops. The indomitable spirit and determination of Indian Army helped India in retaining the post of Tithwal. Soldiers of 6 RAJ RIF, Indian Army can be seen charging on the enemy in a hand to hand combat.


Setting the Stage:- 

Location:- Tithwal, a strategically important village located in Kashmir, nestled between the Richhmar Gali and Nastachun Pass.

Preceding events:- Pakistani infiltrators and tribesmen had occupied Tithwal, aiming to gain control of vital routes in the region.

Stages of the Battle:-

Phase 1:- October 13, 1948: A massive Pakistani attack aimed to capture Indian-held positions around Tithwal, particularly Richhmar Gali.

Fierce resistance:- Indian 6 RAJ RIF troops, led by Lt. Col. Kaman Singh, displayed unwavering courage and strategic defense, repulsing the Pakistani assault with heavy casualties.

Veer Chakra Awards:- The bravery of Indian soldiers, like Lance Naik Karam Singh, was recognized with the prestigious Veera Chakra decorations.

Phase 2: October 1948 and onwards:- The battle took on a seesaw nature, with both sides launching offensives and counter-offensives.

Indian resilience:- Despite significant challenges and casualties, the Indian forces held their ground, defending Tithwal with unwavering determination.

Role of air support:- The Indian Air Force played a crucial role in providing support and suppressing enemy positions.

Outcome and Significance

Staunchly defended:- Through sheer courage and resilience, the Indian Army successfully defended Tithwal, halting further Pakistani advancements and safeguarding crucial territory.

Disrupting infiltration:- The battle thwarted Pakistani attempts to infiltrate deeper into Indian Kashmir through Tithwal and surrounding areas.

Turning point:- The successful defense of Tithwal is considered a pivotal turning point in the 1947-48 war, boosting Indian morale and paving the way for their eventual victory.

Legacy

National War Memorial: The battle is commemorated at the National War Memorial in India, with murals depicting the valor of Indian soldiers.

Symbol of courage:- The Battle of Tithwal stands as a powerful symbol of Indian resilience and unwavering determination in the face of adversity.
